Artist Statement: Hi, I’m Tanner Jehlen, a Florida-born figurative oil painter. I create moody, painterly works that draw from the state’s shadowed undercurrents. In contrast to idyllic images of sunlit beaches, my paintings explore a grittier, more swamp-laden Florida. I build dim, atmospheric scenes where wildlife and stark figures emerge from darkness, charged with a quiet, palpable tension.
Raised outside of Tampa, I developed a lived awareness of Florida’s overlap between the constructed and the natural. Influenced by these environments, I situate my figures along the uneasy boundary between urban and rural space. At the edges of development, pockets of rural life persist; places where human presence lingers and nature continues to stir. My work centers on the dissonance within these spaces, where animals, residents, and corporate outsiders coexist with a sense of displacement.
By presenting a grittier vision of Florida, I aim to resonate with those who find beauty in its eeriness, and to draw attention to the wildlife and natural landscapes that are often degraded in favor of the state’s polished, honeymoon getaway, coastal cuteness.
Artist Bio: Tanner Jehlen is a figurative oil painter whose work portrays issues of interactions between humans and nature. Through dim, atmospheric scenes polarized by stark figures, Jehlen creates mysterious paintings related to her upbringing in Florida. Drawing from personal experience alongside the questionable practices of businesses and land developers, she centers her work on portraying captures of rural life, accompanied by disquieted events. Her work examines how Florida’s natural land and existing life is altered by those who imprudently expand urban developments. Jehlen has exhibited in juried and community art shows, displaying her painterly style in conjunction with reminiscently Floridian shadowed environments.
